About Us

Owen E. Suter, III has carefully thought out details in design with the same attention to fine proportions, and the same gracious approach to living, that are characteristic of fine antiques. Our close proximity to so many significant historical properties including Colonial Williamsburg, Monticello, and Mount Vernon, has had a tremendous influence on all of our reproduction furnishings.

Skilled Craftsmanship is apparent in every detail of our bench made furniture. Some of the most important details of construction, which add greatly to furniture’s value and authenticity, are not visible. These hidden details in construction of each piece can only be reproduced by skilled hands in the same manner as the originals were made.

The construction features of our furniture include dovetail drawers front and back, center drawer runners and additional glue block for added strength. Dovetailed rails of solid wood are used between all drawers to stand up to the test of time. We also use mortise and tenon joinery as well as additional pegs to add to durability in all of our furniture. All glass used in the pieces are individually hand set for added quality. We also offer the option of hand beaded drawer fronts. These drawers take much more skill to construct than a lip drawer because the fittings have to be perfect.

Our exquisite Bed Posts are constructed of one solid piece of wood that is skillfully hand turned on a lathe. Each bed post is cross bolted for ease of assembly. Our headboards are finished on both sides so that you can flip the headboard as time makes its mark and retain the look of a brand new headboard. The beautiful carvings on the bed posts are still created by hand using chisels.

All Owen Suter’s Furniture is made of the finest solid Mahogany, Walnut, Cherry and Tiger Maple woods. A specially developed finish is skillfully applied to each piece after the piece has been created. The multi-step hand rubbed finish is used to give you the patina and timeless elegance found in fine antiques.

Our furniture designs create endless possibilities for creating unusual and individual room settings for you and your family to enjoy for many generations.

Rest Assured: Tradition is alive and well in Richmon.  At Owen Suter’s furniture shop you can buy “the look” favored in this part of the Commonwealth- handcrafted reproduction Chippendale corner cupboards, Hepplewhite huntboards and Queen Anne drop-leaf tables. Owen Suter is now the sixth generation of his family that has been making furniture. And his pieces of solid cherry, mahogany, walnut or tiger maple are prized for their hand carvings and inlays. There is over 150 designs available.

We also specializes in home accessories and fine European linens, especially ones that fit their old-fashioned four-poster beds. We stock Portuguese matelasse coverlets, Egyptian cotton sheets and Hungarian duck down comforters and pillows. The adustable dust ruffles can go up to a 27-inch drop, available in inverted pleat or flat panels.

Our History

As a sixth generation furniture maker, Owen E. Suter, III had a desire to design and manufacture a quality handmade 18th century line of reproduction furniture. After graduating from Hampden Sydney College,  he established Owen Suter’s Fine Furniture.

Owen Suter’s Fine Furniture was founded and has been carried through to its present stage of operation, with the goal of reproducing with distinction, quality handcrafted reproductions for an appreciative clientele. Thanks to the efforts of the great Museums and Historical Properties, and the work of the home design magazines, the number of people who appreciate fine reproductions of great things of the past have always been in high demand. Owen Suter’s Collection of handcrafted reproductions has historical influence and adapts very well to today’s lifestyle.

Today, Owen Suter’s Fine Furniture offers an extensive line of home furnishings and executive office furniture.  All of the furniture is available in solid cherry, mahogany, walnut and tiger maple. We also offer custom furniture design and manufacturing services. Our experience ranges from reproducing historical pieces to designing and installing corporate boardrooms.

We are so proud of our partnerships with The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.  Reproducing pieces of furniture  that are part of the collections owned by these prestigious organizations is such an honor.  We hope you will enjoy seeing the detailed crafsmanship in each of these pieces
